Natural Dye ELS Recycled Cotton Slub T-shirt - Sharinbai + Doro Shibori
These T-shirts bring together a variety of materials and methods to create something truly special. The 280 GSM jersey fabric is knit from a blend of recycled cotton collected during the yarn-spinning process, offcuts from our Double Heavyweight T-shirts, and luxurious extra-long staple cotton. Knit at low tension and slow speed, the result is a fabric that feels soft and bouncy, with a rich slubby texture throughout. Made start to finish in Japan.
That texture interacts beautifully with natural dyeing, as the variations within the fabric absorb color at slightly different rates, creating even greater depth. Here, the garment is hand-dyed in Amami, an island chain in southern Japan with a centuries-old dyeing tradition.
To create a truly one-of-a-kind garment, artisans apply three natural dye techniques to a single T-shirt using shibori, a method similar to Western tie-dye. The shirt is tied off and section-dyed in stages: first with the warm, rosy dye of the Sharinbai tree; then with Sharinbai combined with Amami's iron-rich dorozome mud dye; and finally with Sharinbai layered with repeated dorozome immersions, producing an almost black tone.
The Crewneck T-Shirt has a modern athletic fit with binder neck ribbed collar, union special flat side seam construction and is made in Japan.
